Coming Out On Screen
By Isabella Cornell
Alden Peters is the director, producer and star behind one of the most anticipated films at this year’s Queer Screen Mardi Gras Film Festival. Coming Out is Alden’s story, he turns the camera on himself to share and expose himself through the journey of the coming out process.
Coming Out is both raw and honest. From disclosing his sexuality to reflecting on the perceived notions of queerness in our society with an incredible sense of humanity, the film reflects on the emotional state of all queer people before coming to terms with their sexuality, as well as talking to some of the people who have helped others navigate the journey.
Many of us in the community understand the full range of emotion that accompanies coming out, from elation and support to awkwardness and hardship. From this viewpoint, Coming Out is a story that will never lose its relevance.
The film screened at festivals like Outfest, BFI Flare and NewFest in New York, where it has received critical acclaim from critics, with Time Out New York calling it ‘one of the best 10 films at NewFest’ and Out Magazine calling the film ‘Heartwarming’.
Coming Out is screening during Queer’s Screen Mardi Gras Film Festival Feb 15 – March 2nd . Go to queerscreen.org.au for more information.
